This 1978 Yamaha XS650 was acquired by the seller in 2004 and subsequently underwent a refurbishment that was completed in 2014, which included installing a replacement 654cc SOHC parallel twin, refinishing the bike in black with a checkerboard-pattern stripe, and fitting a replacement fiberglass tail section, LED tail light, triple disc brakes, mufflers, and instruments. Equipment includes a five-speed transmission, a solo seat, progressive-rate rear shocks, and both kick and electric starters. Maintenance performed in preparation for the sale is said to have included replacing the battery, flushing the brake fluid, and cleaning the air filters and the carburetors. This XS650 is now offered at no reserve with a clean Iowa title in the seller’s name.
The fuel tank, front fender, side panels, and Omars Fiberglass rear tail section and frame were painted black as part of the refurbishment. A black and white checkerboard-pattern stripe adorns the fuel tank and tail section. Equipment includes a replacement solo seat, a black rectangular mirror, an aftermarket LED taillight, and both center and side stands.
Seven-spoke alloy wheels measuring 19″ front and 18″ rear wear Dunlop tires. Suspension consists of a telescopic fork as well as twin progressive-rate chrome shocks mounted to the swingarm.
Dual front disc brakes with a remote-reservoir master cylinder and slotted rotors were fitted under current ownership, as was a single disc brake with a solid rotor at the rear. The seller states that the brake fluid was flushed in January 2022.
Replacement instrumentation mounted ahead of the chrome low-rise handlebar consists of a 140-mph speedometer and a 12k-rpm tachometer. The five-digit odometer shows 188 miles, and total mileage is unknown.
The replacement 654cc SOHC parallel twin was reportedly sourced from a 1981 XS650, and it is equipped with an electronic ignition system, twin petcocks, and both kick and electric starters as well as a dual exhaust system with flat black-painted header pipes and aftermarket chrome mufflers. The seller states that the battery was replaced and the air filters and the carburetors were cleaned in preparation for the sale.
Power is sent to the rear wheel through a five-speed transmission and a replacement drive chain. The front and rear sprockets were replaced as part of the refurbishment.
