This 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu SS is a convertible example that was originally delivered to Fairway Chevrolet of Westport, Connecticut, before being acquired by the seller in September 2018. The car is finished in Orange Flame Poly with Antique White stripes over white upholstery and is powered by a 454ci V8 paired with a four-speed manual transmission and a Positraction rear end. It was reportedly refurbished under previous ownership including a repaint in lacquer as well as refreshing the interior and mechanical components. Equipment includes a power-folding white convertible soft top, F41 heavy-duty suspension, power front disc brakes, 15″ five-spoke wheels, a center console, a heater, and a retro-style AM/FM stereo with Bluetooth. This Chevelle SS 454 is offered with removed parts, multiple keys, factory build sheets, manufacturer’s literature, and transferrable New York registration.
The car was refinished in the factory Orange Flame Poly (65) under previous ownership, reportedly using lacquer paint, at which time Antique White stripes were added. Features include a white convertible soft top, a retrofitted cowl induction hood with hold-down pins, a blacked-out grille, wheel opening moldings, chrome bumpers, quad taillamps, and a dual-outlet exhaust that exits below the rear bumper. The factory hood is reportedly included in the sale.
Gray-finished 15″ wheels are mounted with 245/60 BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires with 2018 date codes. Stopping power is provided by vacuum-assisted front disc brakes and rear drums. The car was factory equipped with the F41 heavy-duty suspension which included a larger rear sway bar, boxed control arms, and heavy-duty shocks. Power steering was added under current ownership, and the factory manual steering box is said to be included in the sale.
The interior features front bucket seats and a rear bench trimmed in White Elk vinyl with matching door panels. Equipment includes a center console, a heater, crank windows, lap belts, and a retro-style AM/FM stereo with Bluetooth capability connected to rear-mounted speakers. The factory radio is included with the car.
A two-spoke steering wheel features an SS-branded horn pad and frames a 120-mph speedometer, a tachometer, an analog clock, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer indicates 16k miles, approximately 200 of which have been added by the seller. True mileage is unknown.
The 454ci V8 was overhauled under previous ownership, at which time the block was decked and a cowl induction air cleaner was fitted. The block shows casting *B7 72* indicating a casting date of the February 7, 1972. The factory dual-snorkel air cleaner is reportedly included in the sale.
Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a Muncie M22 close-ratio four-speed manual transmission and an optional G80 Positraction differential with a 3.31:1 ratio. The transmission shows stamping *2B617111* which corresponds to the last eight characters in the VIN number. A stainless steel Pypes dual exhaust was fitted under current ownership.
The broadcast sheet indicates the Z15 SS454 equipment group, additional options and codes, and initial delivery to Fairway Chevrolet. Handwritten notes describing the car’s history and various part numbers are included in the gallery below.
The car does not have a title, as it is registered in a state that does not issue titles for a vehicle of its age. It is being sold on its transferrable registration.
