This 1972 Volkswagen Thing is finished in red over black upholstery and is powered by a 1.6-liter flat-four mated to a four-speed manual transmission. Equipment includes a black soft top, 14″ steel wheels, yellow fog lamps, a brush guard front bumper, a fold-down windshield, removable doors, and 1974-specification rear side intakes. The car is said to have been refurbished during previous ownership in Mexico before being acquired by the seller and relocated to Arizona in 2021. This Type 181 is offered at no reserve with two keys, import documents, and a clean Arizona title in the seller’s name.
The car was repainted in its current shade of red during previous ownership and features a retractable black soft top that is shown in its raised position in the gallery below. Additional exterior details include yellow fog lamps, a fold-down windshield, removable doors, black bumpers, chrome mirrors, black vinyl graphics along the rocker panels, 1974-specification rear side intakes, and dual exhaust outlets. The seller notes evidence of prior accident damage, and blemishes on the body are shown up close in the gallery below.
Black 14″ steel wheels are wrapped with 27×8.50 Kumho Road Venture MT tires, and a matching spare is mounted to the swing-away rear carrier. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel drum brakes. The seller states the brake lines were replaced during current ownership.
The cabin features front bucket seats and a rear folding bench trimmed in black upholstery with a matching dash pad and parcel shelf mat. The seller states that the turn-signal and wiper switches were sourced from a later-model Beetle and the rearview mirror is an aftermarket replacement.
The four-spoke steering wheel fronts a 140-km/h VDO speedometer with an inset fuel gauge. The five-digit odometer shows over 59k kilometers (~36k miles), approximately 4k of which have been added during current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
The air-cooled 1.6-liter flat-four features a single carburetor. Service carried out during current ownership is said to include an engine overhaul, and replacement of the accelerator cable and battery.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. The seller states that the floors were replaced during previous ownership, and additional underbody photos are available in the gallery below.
