This 1975 Norton Commando 850 is finished in silver and powered by an over-bored 828cc parallel twin mated to a four-speed transmission. Equipment includes a black two-up seat, both center and side stands, front and rear disc brakes, Sun 19″ alloy rims, both electric and kick starters, Isolastic drivetrain mounts, electronic ignition, and an LED taillight. The bike was acquired by its current owner in December 2014, and work completed in 2017 included re-dishing the front wheel, replacing the fuel tank and headlight, installing a Kingpin Components ignition cutout switch and Lansdowne fork dampers, and rebuilding the gearbox and engine with 0.020″-over pistons, a re-ground crankshaft, a three-phase alternator, and a 36mm Mikuni carburetor. Work in the past 300 miles is said to have included changing the oil and adjusting the valve clearances, ignition timing, and drive chain. This Commando 850 Mk3 is offered at no reserve in California by the seller on behalf of its current owner with service records and a clean Nevada title in the owner’s name.
The side covers and replacement Interstate long-range fuel tank were refinished in silver with black and maroon striping, matching the rear fender. Features include a steel double-cradle frame, a chrome front fender, a replacement Lucas European headlight, a two-up seat with a chrome grab bar, both center and side stands, a replacement wiring harness, and an LED taillight. Scratches on the left side of the fuel tank are depicted in the image gallery below.
Silver-finished 19″ Sun alloy rims laced with stainless-steel spokes wear Avon RoadRider tires. The front wheel was re-dished in January 2017. Suspension consists of a conventional fork fitted with adjustable Lansdowne dampers as well as twin replacement preload-adjustable shocks mounted to the swingarm. Braking is supplied by AP Racing front and Norton-Lockheed rear calipers over solid rotors, with a braided stainless-steel line fitted up front.
Instrumentation sitting ahead of the chrome handlebar consists of a 150-mph speedometer, a tachometer with a 7k-rpm redline, and a bank of indicators including one added for low voltage. The five-digit odometer shows 26k miles. The right-side grip is torn, as is the casing on the clutch cable housing.
The 828cc OHV parallel twin is fitted with a 36mm Mikuni carburetor, a three-phase alternator, an aftermarket electric starter, an electronic ignition module, and a Kingpin Components oil switch that disables starting unless the oil flow valve is open. The engine was over-bored 0.020″ in April 2017 and rebuilt with a M.A.P piston kit, stainless-steel valves, and a re-ground crankshaft as well as a replacement camshaft, connecting rods and bearings, crankshaft main bearings, oil pump, and exhaust headers. Service in the past 300 miles reportedly included changing the oil and adjusting the valve clearances, ignition timing, and drive chain. A welded repair is visible around the right-side muffler’s leading edge.
Power is sent to the rear wheel through a four-speed transmission that was rebuilt with a layshaft roller bearing conversion kit.
