This 1984 Mercedes-Benz 380SL was purchased by its current owner from its previous owner of 22 years on BaT in January 2021. Subsequent work included repair of the air-conditioning system and conversion to R134a refrigerant, an overhaul of the cooling system, overhauling the four-speed automatic transmission, and replacing the timing chain components and valve cover gaskets on the 3.8-liter V8. The car is finished in Lapis Blue Metallic over Palomino leather, and equipment includes a body-color removable hardtop, a navy blue soft top, 14″ Bundt wheels, fog lights, automatic climate control, cruise control, and a Becker AM/FM/cassette stereo. This R107 now shows 90k miles and is offered by the seller on behalf of its current owner with service records, a clean Carfax report, and a clean North Carolina title.
The car is finished in Lapis Blue Metallic and features a body-color removable hardtop and a navy blue convertible soft top that is said to have been replaced. Additional features include quadruple headlights, front fog lights, a power antenna, and chrome-accented bumpers and trim. There is corrosion on the left-front fender, and faded paint and scratches are noted by the seller.
The 14″ Bundt wheels are wrapped in 205/70 General Altimax RT43 tires. The car was factory equipped with power steering, a fully independent suspension, and power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes. The power steering filter, coupler, cam seal, and damper were replaced in July 2021 along with the tie rods and brake hoses, and a brake fluid flush was performed at the same time. The brake pads were replaced in December 2021, and work in April 2022 included replacing the subframe bushings and rear shocks as well as performing an alignment.
The cabin features two bucket seats upholstered in replacement Palomino leather along with a color-coordinated center console and door panels. Amenities include automatic climate control, cruise control, a Becker AM/FM/cassette stereo, and power windows and locks. The air-conditioning system was overhauled in 2021, which included conversion to R134a refrigerant and replacing the blower motor regulator, evaporator temperature switch, pressure switch, and control module. The left window regulator was also replaced in 2021. The dashboard is cracked, the sun visors have been removed, and the wood trim is worn.
The four-spoke steering wheel fronts VDO instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, a clock, and gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel economy, and fuel level. The six-digit odometer shows 90k miles, approximately 1k of which were added under current ownership.
The 3.8-liter M116 V8 was factory rated at 155 horsepower and 196 lb-ft of torque, and power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. Work during current ownership included repair of the radiator, an overhaul of the transmission, and replacing the following components:
- Valve cover gaskets
- Timing chain and tensioner
- Thermostat
- Water pump and gasket
- Crankshaft pulley and seal
- Output shaft bearing
- Spark plugs
- Transmission mounts
- Drive belts
- Fuel and air filters
- Hood pad
- Exhaust hangers
The Carfax report lists no accidents or damage and shows registration history in New York, New Jersey, and North Carolina from the first entry in October 1991.
