This 1990 AM General M998 HMMWV is said to have been a U.S.-based military vehicle before it was acquired by the seller in 2018 and subsequently refurbished. The truck is finished in copper with black accents and is powered by a 6.2-liter diesel V8 linked to a retrofitted 4L80E four-speed automatic transmission and a New Process 242 dual-range transfer case. Equipment includes a slant-back roof, a roof rack, replacement doors, stainless steel door handles and exterior hardware, 37″ tires, LED exterior lights, an air horn, four-place seating, a Rugged Radios intercom/two-way communication system, and a FUSION audio system. Service under current ownership included overhauling the steering system, replacing the batteries and valve cover gaskets, rebuilding the left-rear hub, and repairing the right valve cover, brakes, wiring, and cooling system. This M998 is now offered with service records and a clean North Carolina title in the seller’s name.
The truck was refinished in copper during the refurbishment with black vinyl accents and graphics applied to the roof, rocker panels, doors, and hood. The roof rack, ladder, and exterior hardware are coated in bed liner material. Features include a slant-back roof, replacement doors, stainless steel door handles and exterior hardware, LED lighting, an air horn, a spring-mounted antenna, a receiver hitch, and a Sunseeker awning. One segment of the LED light bar does not illuminate.
Black Rhino 17″ alloy wheels are wrapped in 37×12.5″ Nitto Ridge Grappler tires, and a matching spare is mounted on a rear swing-away carrier. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel disc brakes. Service under current ownership included overhauling the steering system, replacing the master cylinder, left-rear brake caliper, and rear brake lines as well as rebuilding the left-rear hub.
The refurbished interior features replacement front and rear bucket seats upholstered in beige vinyl along with a body-color dashboard and black vinyl floor coverings. Equipment includes four exterior-view cameras, a flat-panel monitor, USB and 12-volt outlets, overhead fans, a Rugged Radios intercom/two-way communication system with headsets, a FUSION audio system with Bluetooth and Sirius XM capability, and an air compressor mounted in the cargo area. The seller notes that the cabin is not watertight and that the rear-view camera wiring needs shielding.
The three-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of a 60-mph speedometer and auxiliary gauges for voltage, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The five-digit mechanical odometer shows 23k miles, approximately 5k of which were added during current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
The naturally aspirated 6.2-liter diesel V8 was factory rated at 150 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque. Service in 2021 included repairing the wiring harness and the right valve cover, removing the battery cutoff switch, and replacing the cooling system hoses, water pump, coolant, fan time delay module, thermal switch, valve cover gaskets, and batteries.
Power is sent to all four wheels through a retrofitted 4L80E four-speed automatic transmission and a New Process 242 dual-range transfer case, both of which were installed in 2021. Additional equipment installed at that time included a 4L80E V-belt stand-alone wiring harnesses, a linkage kit, coolant kit, shifter, cross brace, transfer case adapter, front drive shaft, and a dipstick tube and gasket.
Photos of the refurbishment process can be viewed in the gallery.
The data plate shows the serial and registration numbers along with a March 1990Â delivery date.
