This 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 coupe is said to have been kept by its original owner until 2000, and the seller acquired it in 2015. Under previous ownership the exterior was refinished in red with black stripes over a black interior, and in 2007 the V8 was overbored to displace 402ci and the three-speed automatic transmission was rebuilt. Equipment includes a limited-slip differential, 14″ wheels, front disc brakes, a cassette player, and air conditioning. This Chevelle SS is now offered with dynamometer results, service records from current ownership, red fuzzy dice, a car cover, and a clean Florida title in the seller’s name.
The car’s color was changed from yellow to red with black stripes at some point in the 2000s. Features include lower stripe decals on the sides that run parallel to chrome trim as well as wheel-arch trim, chrome bumpers, and SS 396 badging.
Styled 14″ wheels with trim rings are mounted with 225/70 BFGoodrich Radial T/A white-letter tires. Front disc brakes have been installed, and the system utilizes a vacuum booster and a dual-reservoir master cylinder.
The interior features black upholstery on the front bucket seats and the rear bench. Front and rear floor mats protect black carpeting, and a cassette player has been installed in the factory location. The car is also equipped with air conditioning.
A three-spoke steering wheel with an aftermarket cover sits ahead of instrumentation that includes a 120-mph speedometer and a combination gauge. A trio of aftermarket AutoMeter gauges is positioned below the dashboard. The five-digit odometer shows 74k miles, approximately 3k of which are said to have been added by the seller. True mileage is unknown, and the seller notes that the fuel gauge is inoperable and that the clock has been disconnected because it drains the battery.
The 396ci V8 is said to have been overbored to displace 402ci, with work performed in 2007 by Gary Johns Automotive Machine of Jacksonville, Florida. Long-tube exhaust headers feed a dual exhaust system. Dynamometer results from 2007 indicate that the car produced a peak output of 386 horsepower and 445 lb-ft of torque. The fluids were changed in early 2022.
The engine stamping is shown above, and the ET suffix is consistent with a 396 block rated at 325 horsepower for use in a 1967 or 1968 Chevelle or El Camino with a four-barrel carburetor and an automatic transmission.
Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic. The transmission was rebuilt in 2007, at which time a limited-slip differential was installed.
Records from current ownership will accompany the vehicle, as will a car cover.
