This 1978 Chevrolet Corvette is said to have been purchased new by the seller’s grandfather and is one of 6,502 Pace Car Edition examples produced to commemorate the model’s selection as the pace car for the 1978 Indianapolis 500. The seller acquired the car in 1999, and subsequent work included a repaint as well as installation of a replacement 400ci V8 with a Dart SHP block, an Edelbrock intake manifold, and Air Flow Research cylinder heads. Additional equipment includes a Tremec TKO-600 five-speed manual transmission, a limited-slip differential, a G Force Performance crossmember, a RideTech rear StrongArm suspension system, American Racing 18″ wheels, long-tube headers, Borla mufflers, removable glass T-tops, and a JVC digital media player connected to a Rockford Fosgate amplifier and Infinity speakers. This C3 Corvette is now offered with service records dating to 1999, repair manuals, spare parts, the removed 15″ alloy wheels, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.
The car was refinished in 1999 in black and silver with red pinstripes and features pop-up headlights, removable glass T-tops, a wrap-around rear window, and front and rear spoilers. Paint chips, bubbling, and other blemishes are shown up close in the gallery.
Polished 18” American Racing wheels are mounted with 255/45 front and 285/40 rear Continental ExtremeContact DW Tuned tires. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel disc brakes. A RideTech rear StrongArm system with adjustable coilovers was installed in 2014, and the rear brakes are said to have been replaced at that time. The removed 15″ alloy wheels will accompany the car.
The cabin features bucket seats upholstered in gray leather with matching door panels and carpets. Amenities include a dash-mounted clock along with power windows, mirrors, and door locks. A JVC digital media player is connected to a Rockford Fosgate amplifier and Infinity speakers mounted in the cargo area. The seller notes that the air conditioning system requires service, and recommends re-attaching the carpeted trim on the transmission tunnel and seatbacks.
A leather-wrapped steering wheel is mounted to a tilting and telescoping column and frames a 140-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 5,300-rpm redline. Auxiliary gauges are mounted in the center stack. The five-digit odometer shows 95k miles, approximately 50k of which have been added by the seller. True mileage is unknown.
The replacement 400ci V8 was assembled in 2014 by CNC Motorsports of Brookings, South Dakota, with a Dart SHP block and Air Flow Research cylinder heads, according to the seller. Additional equipment includes a Moroso air cleaner, an Edelbrock intake manifold, an MSD Atomic electronic fuel injection system, and an aluminum radiator with dual electric puller fans.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Tremec TKO-600 five-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. The car is equipped with a G Force Performance crossmember, and the exhaust system features long-tube headers and Borla mufflers. The seller states that the car cannot pass a California emissions test, therefore it cannot be sold to an in-state private party buyer.
Service and repair manuals are included in the sale along with service records dating to 1999 that can be viewed in the gallery.
A collection of spare and removed parts will accompany the car.
